2020 seems to be by consensus the year when 5G cellular technology will become available. 5G will not correspond to a single wireless technology working in a given frequency band, but to a set of technologies in multiple bands. In addition to the current sub-6 GHz frequency bands being used for access today, 5G networks will also work in the 10 GHz to 100 GHz range according to Ericsson [1]. In order to lay the foundation for 5G, the European Commission co-funds the METIS (Mobile and Wireless Communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society) project under the Seventh Framework Programme for research and development.
