Important trends have been emerging in small cell deployment since 2016 driven by enterprise and urban networks, which will get denser as the decade progresses.  Small cells will cease to be a niche, tactical solution to fill gaps, but become a key element in operators strategies to chase even higher capacity and new services

This transformation of the small cell market is clearly mapped in the data and five year forecasts included in the latest report from Rethink Technology Research, 'Small cell deployments and key trends 2015 - 2021'.

The report, based on surveys of over 75 leading mobile operators worldwide, shows how densification and virtualization of networks are key to those strategies, and will make small cells, deployed at huge scale, into the foundation of the modern HetNet. The report also highlights important enablers of this trend, which will need to evolve rapidly, including SON (self-optimizing networks) .

The deployment of dense small cells will increase the reliance on the mobile network edge as a key platform to enable new services which require new levels of QoS, location awareness and latency reduction.

This document contains explanatory notes and brief commentary to accompany the Excel spreadsheet ‘Rethink Small Cells 1 Data Module January 2017’

All modules contain between six and 10 data tables plus regional breakdown, with accompanying commentary consisting of graphs and concise commentary on the assumptions underlying the forecasts, and the key factors driving them.
