One of the most disruptive ideas in the mobile world is to break the ties between spectrum and long term operator licences altogether. Of course unlicensed spectrum is playing an increasingly vital role in carrier strategies via Wi-Fi, as well as supporting new service providers, but organizations like the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance have a grander vision. As well as fully ‘free-for-all’ airwaves, there would be others which supported the quality of service and interference protection of a licensed band, but could be allocated to service providers on an on-demand basis, often for short periods of time or to deliver a vertical application.
